How to Get a Wegovy Prescription Online in Texas

The short version for Texas

Texas has one of the heavier obesity burdens in the country. As of 2023, 34.4 percent of adult Texans have obesity, and the state health department reports that about one fifth of children ages 10 to 17 do as well. Texas Medicaid does not cover Wegovy for weight management, only GLP-1 medications prescribed for type 2 diabetes, and there is no Texas law requiring commercial plans to cover it either. For most Texans that means the path to Wegovy runs through a plan-by-plan coverage check or self-pay, and a prescriber who will do the medical evaluation properly.

You can be evaluated online by a Texas-licensed provider the same day, with no appointment to book. What is different here is the rules underneath that visit. Texas requires a valid practitioner-patient relationship before anything is prescribed, and that relationship has to be established through a real-time telemedicine interaction that meets the standard of care. Does Texas Medicaid cover Wegovy?

No, not for obesity. Texas Medicaid does not cover GLP-1 medications for weight management. It does cover GLP-1 medications when they are prescribed for type 2 diabetes, so a Texan with diabetes may have a covered route to a medication in this class, but Wegovy for weight alone is not on that list. Does Medicare cover Wegovy in Texas?

Medicare's regular Part D benefit does not cover Wegovy for weight loss alone. That is federal law. What exists instead is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, a temporary program running July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027. If you have Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage and meet the weight criteria (a BMI of 35 or more, or lower with certain heart, kidney, blood pressure, or prediabetes conditions), your provider requests prior approval and you pay a flat $50 a month for Wegovy. Part D can also cover Wegovy when it is prescribed for heart attack and stroke prevention, with prior authorization. Confirmed as of 2026-09-02. Rules change year to year, so check your plan.

Commercial insurance in Texas

Texas has no mandate requiring commercial plans to cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss. Coverage varies plan by plan. Many Texas plans cover these drugs only for type 2 diabetes and either exclude obesity use outright or put it behind a heavy prior authorization. The practical point is that your coverage is set by your plan and your employer, not by the state. Texas rules for getting a prescription online

Texas lets a provider prescribe through telemedicine, with conditions. The prescriber must hold a Texas license. A valid physician-patient relationship has to exist first, and it can be created by a real-time telemedicine interaction that meets the same standard of care as an in-person visit. What does not count on its own: filling out a questionnaire, exchanging emails or texts, or an audio-only phone call. How to get Wegovy in Texas, step by step

1. Tell us about you

In clinical trials the average was about 15 percent of body weight over 68 weeks, and results vary.

Side effects and how to handle them

Nausea, constipation, bloating, headache and tiredness are the common ones. They usually settle within the first 2 to 4 weeks. Smaller meals, slower eating, and staying hydrated help. Tell your provider about severe stomach pain, vomiting that will not stop, or signs of gallbladder or pancreas problems.

Follow-up and monitoring

Check-ins at each dose step, then at least every 3 months. Weight, blood pressure, and how you are tolerating it. Labs only where your history calls for them.

What Wegovy is and who it is for

Wegovy is a once-weekly injection of semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It is FDA approved for chronic weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Dosing starts at 0.25 mg and steps up every four weeks to a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg, so the first several months are a ramp. The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, and abdominal pain, and they are the reason the dose is increased slowly. Wegovy carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in animal studies and should not be used by anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. It should not be combined with other GLP-1 medications and should not be used during pregnancy. A provider weighs all of this against your history before prescribing.
