How to Apply Tretinoin: The First-Night Briefing
The tretinoin technique that decides your results: how much, where, in what order with moisturizer, the benzoyl peroxide rule, sunscreen, and waxing.

The tretinoin technique that decides your results: how much, where, in what order with moisturizer, the benzoyl peroxide rule, sunscreen, and waxing.

Tretinoin rewards technique more than almost any prescription. The whole method fits in four lines: cleanse and fully dry, one pea-sized amount spread thin over the whole affected area, nighttime only, moisturizer without shame. [1][2] The two rules people break most: using more product than a pea (buys irritation, not speed), and pairing it with benzoyl peroxide in the same application, which chemically inactivates conventional tretinoin. [1][3]
This is the briefing that should come with the tube. Read it before night one and the first month goes measurably better.
Moisturizer does not cancel tretinoin; it makes staying on tretinoin possible. Three orderings all work: moisturizer first then tretinoin (gentlest), tretinoin first then moisturizer, or the sandwich, moisturizer on both sides. [1] Sensitive skin starts with the sandwich, and there is also a short-contact option for the very reactive: apply, wash off after 30 to 60 minutes, and extend the contact time night by night. [1] If nightly is still too much, every second or third night is the label-sanctioned ramp, stepping to nightly as tolerated. [2] More on the rough early window in the first 8 weeks article.
Tretinoin increases sun sensitivity, and the label tells you to minimize sun and sunlamp exposure, use sunscreen, and cover treated skin when exposure is unavoidable. [2][4] Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is the version of that instruction that fits real life. Two extra label rules: sunburned skin waits until fully recovered before starting or resuming tretinoin, and wind and cold are irritation multipliers worth planning around in winter. [2]
Done right, the payoff is measured in months, not mornings: first changes in 2 to 3 weeks, definite improvement often past 6, trial endpoints at 12. [2][1] If your skin is getting angrier instead of better, do not push through blistering or severe redness; that list, and what to do about each item on it, is in warning signs. And if the routine is dialed and results still stall, the ladder and its alternatives are in the strengths article and when acne needs more than tretinoin.
