Latisse Side Effects and Warning Signs: The Honest List

The short version

Latisse is well tolerated by most people: in the pivotal trial the most common side effects, itchy eyes and eye redness, affected roughly 3 to 4 percent of users. [1] But it carries two pigment effects everyone deserves to hear before the first drop: darkening of the eyelid skin, which usually fades after stopping, and darkening of the iris, the colored part of the eye, which the label says is likely permanent. [1]

This article is the honest list, in two halves: the tolerable and cosmetic effects worth knowing about, and the specific symptoms that mean stop and get medical attention, each written as what happens, what you do, and how fast.

The common and cosmetic effects

• Itchy or red eyes. The most common reactions, at about 3 to 4 percent in the trial. [1] Mild and occasional is worth mentioning at your next check-in; persistent or worsening belongs in the warning list below.
• Eyelid skin darkening. Brownish darkening of the lid skin where the solution sits. The label reports it may be reversible after stopping the product. [1] If it bothers you, that is a legitimate reason to reconsider, not vanity.
• Iris darkening: the one to take seriously. Bimatoprost can increase brown pigment in the iris itself, and the label is blunt that iris pigmentation is likely to be permanent. [1] This is best documented with the same drug used as an eye drop for glaucoma; with careful skin-only application to the upper lid it is an uncommon finding, but uncommon is not zero, and permanent is permanent. Blue and mixed-color eyes are where a shift would show. If you would not accept any risk of your eye color deepening, this is not your product. • Hair where you did not want it. Hair can grow wherever the solution repeatedly touches skin, cheekbone smudges included. [1] Blot the excess every night.
• Lash asymmetry. Length, thickness, and darkness can differ between eyes or from the original lashes. Differences generally settle back after stopping. [1]

The warning signs, as receipts

• If you get eye pain, a sudden change or drop in vision, or significant redness with discharge: stop applying and seek medical attention promptly, the same day. These are the symptoms that can signal inflammation inside the eye or infection, neither of which you diagnose at home. [1]
• If you develop conjunctivitis or an eyelid reaction: stop and message your provider before the next application. The label specifically names these as reasons to seek advice immediately. [1]
• If your eye is injured or infected, or you are having eye surgery: pause the product and ask before restarting. A new ocular condition changes the risk picture. [1]
• If you use glaucoma drops and your eye doctor notes a pressure change: make sure they know you use Latisse. It is the same drug family and can interact with pressure treatment; that combination is meant to be supervised. [1]
